During the Miocene era, Southern Maryland was under a subtropical sea (the Salisbury Embayment) that served as a breeding ground for marine life, providing abundant prey for sharks.
The iconic Calvert Cliffs are continuously eroded by rain, wind, and the Chesapeake Bay, washing new fossils and shark teeth onto the beaches, particularly after storms.
Dozens of shark species lived there including the Megalodon, along with whales, rays, and dolphins, leaving behind immense numbers of teeth.
